Once again, the Kokanee Karnival has had another successful year! The program (http://www.kokaneekarnival.org) offers various activities throughout the school year, including Angler Education. This year I was able to organize classes for 12 elementary schools:

291 TOTAL Students!!!!!!
In the Fall of 2006, teachers confirmed their interest in this aspect of the program. In April, 2007 AE instructors distributed the Responsible Angler workbooks and the 2007 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations to these schools. I also included an Introductory Page and an Angler Regulations Activity. Each student, guided by their classroom teachers, spent 14-16 hours during the remaining school year (Apr-June) to complete their assignments.
I also organized a “Fish Crew” that gave a 2-hour presentation, in each classroom, covering Angling Regulations, Knot Tying, Dilemmas/Ethics, and Safety. Ten schools were selected to participate in the Kokanee Karnival Angling Clinic located at Shevlin Park. During this clinic, students participated in a Hooks and Ladders activity, focusing on the life cycle of Kokanee salmon. Also they rotated through four stations highlighting Fishing Methods, Casting, Knot Tying, and Fish Biology.
The afternoon portion included fishing, fly tying, and lure building.
All portions were completed by June 19th All administrative duties were completed Aug. 20th.
Volunteers Bob Mullong, Jeri Welbourn, Mark Reisinger, Bob Griffin, Tom McLaughlin, Vivian Rockwell, Dave Semich, Jim Moore, Betsy Brauer, Rod Juranek, Gene McMullen, and Sandy Dunahay gave a total of 295 hours and drove a total of 1667 miles to complete our tasks. Now that is a real “FINS UP”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The program is growing and now, with the aid of more Certified Instructors, the classes will be increased to 16 in the 2007-2008 school year.
It has been a pleasure to participate in the Angler Education Program.
FINS UP!
